Diamond Turning vs. Injection Molding: Which Is Right for Your Plastic Optics?

When developing a precision polymer optic, one of the first manufacturing decisions is whether the lens should be diamond turned or injection molded. The right answer depends largely on quantity, geometry, material, optical performance, development stage, and tooling investment.

When Should You Use Diamond Turning?

Diamond turning is often the best choice for prototypes, low-volume production, and highly complex optical surfaces.

A single-point diamond turning machine can directly produce aspheric, freeform, diffractive, and other precision surfaces without the investment required for injection mold tooling. This makes diamond turning particularly valuable during product development, when an optical design may still be changing.

It can also significantly shorten the path from optical design to a functional prototype.

When Does Injection Molding Make More Sense?

Precision injection molding becomes attractive when production quantities increase.

Once the mold is developed and the molding process is established, injection molding can produce large quantities of complex polymer optics at a comparatively low unit cost. Applications include imaging lenses, laser collimators, freeform illumination optics, lens arrays, prisms, and other precision optical components.

Can You Use Both Processes?

Yes, and frequently that is the best development strategy.

A manufacturer can diamond turn prototype optics first, validate the optical system, make design adjustments, and then transition the validated design into injection molding for production.
